Guernsey vs SA - Petrol pumps
I have been here for three months now and I am still amazed at how different things are over here. I just had to post this. I was waiting in the car in what appeared to me to be a closed-down petrol garage for my never-stop-talking future mother-in-law. I then realized that something didn't seem right, I knew for a fact that this garage was open because it is part of the shop where Mathew works. I took a closer look at one of the pumps and burst out laughing when I read the notice on it... PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A SELF HELP SERVICE ...so F-M-I-L explained to me that you had to go inside to pay afterwards. I stared at her in disbelief and asked her whether people don't sometimes drive off without paying. She replied in a very matter-of-fact tone that it does happen, but that it is covered by the insurance. I just can't imagine ANYONE even TRYING to open a self help petrol garage in SA. It would run bankrupt within a month! I just love this place :o)

When i first came to the states 6yrs ago that was the common practice. Now no one does that anymore. You have to go in and pay first or pay at the pump with a credit card. Too many pple had started driving off without paying so that broke the trust the gas station had for the pple.
How are u doing?
Hey girl, I think that I am doing a whole lot better lately. Thanx for asking :o) To answer on your other comments... That post was written in Afrikaans, it's the language I grew up to speak and it's one of the native South African languages. Emil also suggested that I go into therapy, so yes, I am considering it. It is always nice to know that there is someone out there who understands, so thank you for your comment on my thoughts that are such a mess.
I get trapped the same way when in Europe. In a way we are spoiled here. But then again, it does create jobs for people attending the pumps.
Glad you are considering your options. The psycho-analytical process really helps - Anais Nin also went through it and she wrote her best stuff in that period. Good luck on the decision. And keep blogging - I love to read to you!!
Lol I was actually thinking of how many people in SA would be driving off without paying, but yeah I guess it does create jobs. You always tend to see the positive in things, maybe I'm just a pessimist ;)
Strange that you should mention her. I first read about her work when I was still a teenager, somehow I've forgotten alot of the things I used to read.
